There are some who accept the LGBT community and others who reject it. Because some members of this community believe that society does not cater to or accept them, they are constantly battling to validate their own identity while society tells them to discard it. Today, there are individuals among us who exist in a parallel universe to our own.
This is because they have limited or no access to certain opportunities available to the majority of us. These are the LGBT individuals. Negative attitudes toward LGBT people have made it more difficult for them to obtain medical treatment. As a result, they may require less frequent visits to healthcare providers than other individuals.
This is due to the fear of receiving insufficient treatment and discrimination. Apart from that, Dr Benedict Sim Lim Heng, an infectious diseases physician, stated, "Many LGBT individuals have complained about receiving awkward and sometimes hostile stares from doctors or clinical staff when disclosing their personal sexual orientation."
LGBT people fear that they will not be treated equally with other people simply because they are different. Not only that, they want to feel a sense of belonging to society. However, it was the opposite. This is because they felt unwelcome and unsafe.
According to Gabrielle Levy, a national survey of over 12,000 LGBTQ teens aged 13 to 17 by the Human Rights Campaign and researchers at the University of Connecticut found that nearly 8 in 10 reported feeling depressed or down in the previous week, while only a quarter report feeling safe at school. Additionally, nearly all (95 percent) stated that they had difficulty sleeping at night, and 86 percent stated that their average stress level was 5 or greater on a scale of 1 to 10. Additionally, LGBT individuals have expressed fear of disclosing or expressing their identities at work or school.
This is because, according to Gabrielle Levy, they have complained about peer bullying and a lack of support from teachers and counsellors. Finally, many LGBT individuals have been subjected to sexual harassment. 11% report being raped or sexually assaulted as a result of their identity, and 20% report having had an unwanted sexual encounter in the last year.
